Happy New Year 2017
WOW, only 22 days left until we have the Greatest Show on Grass, The 2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open comes to town the same week as the NFL Super Bowl Weekend.
Every year The Waste Management Phoenix Open is the most attended event on the PGA Tour. One of the biggest sporting events in the world actually. Quite a sight to see the crowds. It is quite the event & quite the production, they do a fabulous job, the stands start getting built in October. I drive by it just about every day & it looks like everything is ready to go! Now we have to hope & pray that we get fantastic weather, I have seen a little bit of both. Two years ago, I cant even believe they could play it was so cold & non-stop pouring rain for 4 days. But typically it is Sunny & all four days are in the70 ‘s & 80’s. One year I believe we even approached 100 in January believe it or not, Phil won that year.
Past Phoenix Open winners include: Phil Mickelson, JB Holmes, Brooks Koepka, Aaron Baddeley, Kevin Stadler (from CO) and Hydeki Matsuyama in 2016, one of my favorites lost in a playoff last year Rickie Fowler is always a huge draw & crowd favorite. He is one of the players that always loves interacting with all of the fans & threw Puma hats out to hundreds of people in the crowd a few years back . The tournament is held at the TPC Scottsdale in North Scottsdale Arizona. The notable part of the tournament in my opinion is a little bit like holding a HUGE party & there just happens to be a golf tournament. Like Woodstock going on with a Golf tournament…
So much fun, not much work gets done that week by the residents of Phoenix. A good time is had by all & millions of dollars are raised by The Thunderbirds to support all of the local charities in Phoenix & all over AZ.
Crowds in excess of 175,000 Spectators attend each day of the tournament. Most notable is Hole 16 where they build a Stadium around the Par 3 hole. Spectators show up early in the morning bloody’s & beers in hand to begin the day. Players throw their hats & high five people in the crowd. If a golfer doesn’t hit the green, the crowd boos, a ball on the green gets a standing ovation and the Wave.
Another thing very unique is the Coors Light Birds Nest. Concerts every night. National Touring acts come and they build a Giant Circus tent with a stage & crazy lights & sound etc, it is so fun, this years acts are Kaskade, Flo Rida, Jake Owen & Chase Rice opening, Blink 182, Toby Keith & the Band Perry. I so wish Metalhead or The Boogie Knights a ton of fun a few years back was amazing … you truly have to see it to believe it. Past guests have been Darius Rucker, Tiesto, Kid Rock, Dierks Bentley, and OAR.
The Luxury Sky Boxes for Corporate Sponsors or Greenskeeper tents in a MUST. Catered food, free drinks (ouch), doesn’t get any better…. It is most definitely one of the most fun weeks in Scottsdale every single year. Every year there are more, which is great. More fun, more money for charity & price is a bit less expensive for each sponsor so each of the smaller companies get a chance. I believe we are going to be on #17 this year…Cant wait!
